Development of Bridge in Oxfordshire

The Management Committe has now approved the aims and objectives of the teams set up in January following the open meeting in Kidlington last Autumn. Taken together, these form the plan for Development of Bridge in Oxfordshire that the Committee undertook at the 2011 AGM to produce before this year's general meeting.

President's Cup

Geoff Nicholas, the President's Cup secretary writes

Congratulations to Nick Smith`s team for their win of the Presidents Cup this season.

After trailing throughout the final, Nick`s team of Nick, Alan Wilson,Dan McIntosh and Stuart McPhee fought back excellently to overcome a deficit of 24 imps going into the last 8 boards and run-out worthy victors. Well done to these four and also to Chris Cooper, who participated successfully for the team in the earlier rounds but was unavailable for the final.

The squad will now go forward to represent the county in the Pachabo competition over the weekend of 16th and 17th June. We wish them the best of luck.

Oxfordshire win Dawes League

Oxfordshire teams played their final matches of the 2011-2012 Midlands Counties Leagues against Worcestershire today.

Their result means that the Oxfordshire A team have won the Dawes League for the first time in living memory.

Congratulations to captain Chris Cooper and all who played for the teams over the course of the season.

Oxfordshire Congress 2012

including the new Welcome Day Pairs for the less experienced player.

This year the Oxford Congress is being expanded. As in previous years we will be holding green-pointed Swiss Pairs on Saturday and green-pointed Swiss Teams on Sunday. Both of these will continue to be held in Steventon Village Hall (OX13 6RR - map here - note that the hall is across the road from the marker on the map) and both are almost fully subscribed (click here for details of how to enter).

The Sandra Landy Trophy for players with fewer than 10,000 local points will be moved to form part of a separate shorter Welcome Day Pairs event held at Drayton Village Hall (OX14 4LG - map here (labelled Drayton Hall) and more details here) on the Saturday. The event is intended to cater for players ranging from relative beginner to club players with fewer than 10,000 local points - more than this and you are ineligible to enter. We aim to provide a welcoming social atmosphere, particularly aimed at the inexperienced player who might find our main Congress a bit formal and intimidating. Tangible prizes including a bridge holiday, the Sandra Landy Trophy and local points will be on offer, but no green points will be awarded. Fewer hands will be played. We hope to run two sections with entrants being able to choose whether to play in the "A" field for the relatively more experienced or in the "B" field with even fewer hands for the more novice players. Entry is not restricted to members of the OBA and you do not need even to be a member of the EBU - you just need to be prepared to experience duplicate bridge - if you haven't tried it we can show you how.

Oxford Times Cup

The OBA's competition for novice pairs will be held on May 20th this year. Please click here for further details.
